Navy Veteran Denied Pentacle Symbol on His Grave
The Defense Department denied a Seattle Navy Veteran the symbol of a pentacle on his grave when he dies because pentacles are not currently allowed on markers in national cemeteries. Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist veterans are allowed to have their religious symbols engraved on military headstones, but not Wiccans as yet. Wicca was finally recognized by the Defense Department in 1996, however the symbol hasn't been recognized by the National Cemetery Association of the Veterans Affairs Department. Wiccans can get the word "Wiccan" or "pentacle" spelled out, but not the actual symbol. Full Story
